Freshman Admissions Policies

HIGH SCHOOL PREPARATION:

The secondary-school program of studies should include 16 units of credit in academic subjects. Specific subject requirements for various fields of study are listed in the Canisius College Academic Catalog.

HOW TO APPLY:

Complete the application form and send in your high school transcript (and college transcript if you are a transfer student), including your SAT or ACT scores. Letters of recommendation are optional.

WHEN TO APPLY:

Prospective students are advised to submit an application during the fall semester preceding the year they wish to enter the college. Canisius employs a rolling admissions policy that enables students to apply any time during the academic year. The college's Admissions Committee reviews the completed application, and the student is notified of a decision within six weeks.

CANDIDATES' REPLY DATE AGREEMENT (CRDA):

Canisius College adheres to the College Entrance Examination Board's Candidates' Reply Date Agreement. The CRDA enables applicants who have been approved for admission to Canisius to consider their choices carefully before making a final decision. Students who have been accepted for admission to Canisius may submit a freshman deposit upon receipt of their letter of acceptance or may withhold the deposit until May 1, thereby taking advantage of CRDA. The deposit is nonrefundable after May 1, 1999.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT:

Students who perform successfully on the College Entrance Examination Board Advanced Placement Test may earn advanced placement in selected disciplines at Canisius. Advanced placement may be authorized in American history, biology, chemistry, computer science, English, European history, French, German, Latin, mathematics, physics, and Spanish. Students who earn a score of 4 or 5 on the appropriate exam will be granted credit and advanced standing in that subject area. Students scoring a 3 may be granted credit and advanced standing based on the review and approval of the appropriate department chairman. Students scoring below a 3 are not eligible for credit or advanced standing.

ADVANCED STANDING:

Students may obtain college credit and advanced standing by completing special courses offered by accredited colleges. Such courses must be taught according to the syllabus of the college, carry credit by the sponsoring college, have special student-selection requirements, and be taught by either high school or college faculty members.

Students who earn a grade of 'B' or better may be granted college credit and advanced standing. The awarding of college credit shall be utilized only for the purpose of substitution in free electives in the student's course of study. Students seeking college credit and advanced standing must provide proper documentation and must petition the appropriate dean when first matriculating at the college.

Special Admissions Programs

CANISIUS' OPPORTUNITY PROGRAMS FOR EDUCATION (COPE)

The COPE Office administers two programs:

Transfer students wishing to enter Canisius in HEOP must show evidence that they were enrolled in EOP or HEOP at their previous institutions and must have earned grade-point averages of at least 2.00.

COPE offers support services for students in both programs. HEOP students are eligible for developmental course work and a six-week pre-freshman summer program. COPE also offers tutorial services, counseling, workshops, seminars, and other assistance to help students succeed academically.

EARLY-ADMISSION POLICY:

High school students who complete their high school graduation requirements, or a majority of those requirements, in fewer than four years may be eligible for early admission to Canisius College. Canisius accepts such students from high schools that officially approve of this policy and whose curricula provide the preparation required for work at the college. In addition to submitting the necessary documents for regular admission, early-admissions candidates must also submit a letter of recommendation from the high school principal or guidance counselor.

ADMISSIONS POLICIES FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS:

Applicants with previous college experience should have certified transcripts of secondary and college records forwarded by those schools directly to the admissions office at Canisius College.

Canisius will consider for transfer all students who have grade-point averages of at least 2.00 at their current or previous institutions. A maximum of 20 courses may be transferred from two-year colleges, and at least 60 more credit hours must be earned at Canisius in order to be awarded a bachelor's degree. Students transferring from four-year institutions must complete at least 30 credit hours, including 18 credits in the major, in order to earn a bachelor's degree.

Advanced standing from accredited two- and four-year institutions of higher education is granted when the course objectives for the completed work are substantially the same as course objectives at Canisius. In certain cases, if advanced standing is not awarded, equivalency examinations may be arranged through the office of the appropriate dean and must be taken within two months after admission.

Community-college and two-year-college students should check with their transfer counselor to determine whether an articulation agreement exists between their college and Canisius.
