SCHOLARSHIPS

General Scholarships: There are numerous scholarships listed in the university catalog. Eligibility requirements for the scholarships differ from scholarship to scholarship. Some are restricted to particular fields of study, some are based on academic achievement, and others are designed to "assist worthy students." The general requirements are listed in the university catalog. Application for these scholarships is made through the Application for Admission and Financial Aid.

Departmental Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded by the individual departments. Scholarships are generally awarded on the basis of a student's talent or academic achievement. Each department has its own criteria and eligibility requirements. Contact the appropriate dean to make application for departmental scholarships.

Ministerial Scholarship (tuition only): The HPU Ministerial Scholarship is available to licensed or ordained Southern Baptist ministerial students. The scholarship is $750 per semester and is paid by the Baptist General Convention of Texas and Howard Payne University. The student must enroll for a minimum of 12 semester hours each semester the scholarship is received. Active Southern Baptist ministers' wives will be entitled to a scholarship in the amount of $300 per semester. Unmarried children of active Southern Baptist ministers, who are 23 years of age or less, will be entitled to receive a scholarship of $300 per semester. Ministers' wives and ministers' children must also enroll for a minimum of 12 semester hours each semester the scholarship is received. Application for and approval of these scholarships must be secured from the dean of the School of Christian Studies prior to each registration period.

Acteens Scholarship (tuition only), National Challenge Award Scholarships (tuition only), and Awana Scholarships (tuition only): These scholarships are determined by achievement levels. Full-time enrollment is required. Scholarship is renewable for a maximum of eight consecutive long semesters if all requirements continue to be met.

There are some scholarships funded through the Baptist General Convention of Texas which require the student to be evaluated each year (i.e., Latin American Scholarship, National Baptist Scholarship, etc.). Applications may be requested by contacting: Baptist General Convention of Texas, Ethnic Scholarships, 333 N. Washington, Dallas, Texas 75246-1798. Confirmation of these scholarships is made by administrators at the Baptist Building in Dallas, Texas.

Outstanding Service Scholarship (tuition only): Awarded to students who have given freely of their time and energies in service to their church, school, or community. The student must maintain a 2.00 cumulative GPA. Available for a maximum of eight consecutive long-semesters. Full-time enrollment required.

Hispanic Leadership Scholarship (tuition only): The student must maintain a 2.00 cumulative GPA. Available for a maximum of eight consecutive long-semesters. Full-time enrollment required.

Honor Graduates (tuition only): High school graduates who are awarded the valedictorian honor will be entitled to receive $1,200 credit each semester, and the salutatorian will be entitled to receive $800 credit each semester. The student must enroll at HPU for the fall semester immediately following graduation from an accredited high school. Verification of honor is required. The student must maintain a 2.50 cumulative GPA. Available for a maximum of eight consecutive long-semesters. Full-time enrollment required.

Academic Scholarships (tuition only): (Available up to eight long-semester maximum; full-time enrollment is required; applied toward tuition only.) All Academic Scholarship recipients' GPAs will be checked at the end of each academic year and appropriate adjustments made to the scholarship for the following academic year. Only one academic scholarship will be awarded to any one student. If a student should retake the ACT/SAT and score higher than on a previous test and the new score falls within a higher scholarship range, then the lower scholarship could become null and void, and the higher scholarship would be awarded IF the student desires. No changes in scholarship level will be permitted after the first day of the student's beginning semester. Residual test scores will not be considered in determining scholarship eligibility.

President's Scholar (Level I): High school graduates who score 30+ on the Enhanced ACT and/or a composite of 1320+ on Recentered SAT will be entitled to receive $2,000 credit each semester as long as the student maintains a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.40.

Honors Scholars (Level II): High school graduates who score 26-29 on the Enhanced ACT and/or a composite of 1170-1310 on Recentered SAT will be entitled to receive $1,500 credit each semester as long as the student maintains a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.15.

Academic Incentive Scholar (Level III): High school graduates who score 22-25 on the Enhanced ACT and/or a composite of 1010-1160 on Recentered SAT will be entitled to receive $1,000 credit each semester as long as the student maintains a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.80.

Transfer Academic Scholarships: If you are a transfer student with ACT/SAT scores that fall into one of the above categories, and have maintained a grade point average of 2.80 or higher (according to the above descriptions) while in college, you will be eligible to apply for this scholarship.

GRANT PROGRAMS

Federal Pell Grant: This is a federally-sponsored program of basic "entitlement" grants. To be eligible, a student must (1) have established financial need; (2) be enrolled in an undergraduate course of study and not previously received a bachelor's degree from any institutions; (3) be enrolled on at least a half-time basis in an eligible program of study; and (4) be a U.S. citizen or in the United States for other than a temporary purpose and intend to become a permanent resident, or are a permanent resident of the Trust Territories of the Pacific Islands.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG): A federally-sponsored program, the FSEOG is available to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need according to an approved need-analysis system. Funding is limited.

Texas Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG): This grant is awarded to students who meet the following criteria: (1) Texas resident; (2) attending a private school; (3) not receiving an athletic scholarship in any form; (4) not enrolled in a theological or religious degree program; and (5) demonstrate financial need. The basic purpose is to help equalize the tuition cost between state-supported schools and private schools. Funding is limited.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT

Federal Work-Study (WSP): A federally-sponsored program for students who demonstrate financial need. Students receive payment by check.
College Workship (WSH): A university-sponsored program. Demonstrated financial need is not a requirement. Students receive payment by check.

LOAN PROGRAMS

Federal Perkins Loan (formerly NDSL): This is a federally-sponsored loan program. Students must be enrolled at least half-time (six hours), demonstrate exceptional financial need, and be mature enough to handle a loan obligation. Undergraduate students may borrow up to $20,000. For first-time borrowers, repayment begins nine months after the student graduates, leaves school, or drops below half-time enrollment.

Federal Stafford Loan (formerly GSL): The Federal Stafford Loan is available to both undergraduate and graduate students and is offered through participating lending institutions. Interest on the need-based (subsidized) FSL will be paid by the federal government while the student is in school with non-need-based (unsubsidized) interest paid for by the borrower during in-school and deferment periods.

Federal Parent Loan (PLUS): Available to parents of dependent students who are not eligible for need-based programs of financial aid or those who need additional funds. Eligibility is determined by the school based on an analysis of student need which includes estimated costs of education less other financial aid.

College Access Loan (CAL): Administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the College Access Loan was designed to assist the college student whose family experiences difficulty in meeting the expected family contribution as established in the need-analysis. Texas residency, half-time enrollment, and satisfactory academic progress is required. The aggregate loan limit is $30,000. Additional information and loan applications are available upon request from the Office of Student Financial Aid.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. In order to apply for state and/or federal assistance, which includes grants, loans, and the work-study program, a student must file the FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA).
  2. In order to apply for financial aid, federal guidelines require a student to be pursuing a degree/certificate that can be obtained from the university he or she is attending. Consult the university catalog for information on degree opportunities at Howard Payne University.
  3. YOU MUST REAPPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID EACH ACADEMIC YEAR.

    Spring Semester - November 15
    Summer Session - April 1
