Application Instructions
Print out a copy of these instructions and keep them at your side as you fill out the
application forms.
If you prefer, you may simply open a second browser window. Leave this page open and then
open the application itself in a second window. A list of forms and documents is available
here.
In completing the application form please place information/responses within designated
boxes. The $60.00 application fee will be submitted on-line via secure server upon submission
of the on-line application. You will add additional page(s), a brief statement of why you wish
to do graduate work in your selected field.
The University of Virginia now accepts online recommendation letters.
When completing the online application, please indicate if you would
like to use the online recommendation option by selecting "Yes" in the
Recommendations section. If you select "No", please have your
recommender return your letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes
signed by the recommender across the flap. Transcripts and any
additional materials should be mailed to the address below. Writing
samples are to be forwarded directly to the department to which you are
applying. We accept one application only per applicant.

Students who wish to be considered for a Jefferson Graduate Fellowship (see http://www.jeffersonscholars.org/graduate/ ) one of the most prestigious awards offered by the University, should be sure to apply by December 1, 2008.
University use of Social Security Numbers:
Please enter your Social Security Number in the box provided. Our request for disclosure of
social security account numbers is optional, except where disclosure may be required by federal
law such as in the case of financial aid and work-study assistance. This request is made to
assist the University in internal tracking of your records and credentials, as well as to
provide you with a personal identifying number for use at the University. This request is
made in accordance with Section 2.2-3803 of the Virginia Code and general administrative
authority over University operations.
Instructions for individual application form fields:
In entering your birthdate and address valid until date., use the 8-number date style; e.g.,
March 8, 1970 = 03081970. (For these items our computer reads numbers only.)
Enter country of Citizenship:
If you are a citizen of a country other than the U.S. enter your Visa Type or Permanent
Resident Card Number. If you are a U.S. citizen enter your home state (do so also if you
are living in Virginia solely for obtaining an education).
If your permanent residence is in the State of Virginia enter the City or County in which
you live.
An applicant, if dependent, parent, legal guardian or spouse, must be domiciled in Virginia
for a period of at least one year immediately prior to the first day of classes while
simultaneously demonstrating domiciling intent. Intent is demonstrated by, among other things,
paying resident taxes to Virginia, obtaining a Virginia driver's license, car and voter
registration. Please fill out the Virginia In-State Educational Privileges form if you claim
entitlement to Virginia in-state educational privileges.

Selecting the appropriate department:
Select the department and area of interest to which you wish to apply using the Search.

Note: After completing the GSAS application, all applicants to the Biomedical Sciences
Program will automatically be sent an email and asked to visit
http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/gpo/bims/researchfoci.cfm to complete an
additional form. Also, Drama accepts students in three-year cycles: 2008, 2011, etc.
Inform us if you are applying to a joint degree program (MA/JD or MA/MBA) with the School of
Law or School of Business.
Financial Aid/Loans:
The Graduate School does not require a separate application form for departmental financial
aid (fellowships and assistantships). If you answer YES to this question, you will
be considered for fellowships/assistantships. Refer to individual departmental websites for
deadlines.

Previous Education:
Include transcripts issued by the registrars in sealed envelopes for all college/university
study. We require one copy only. An English translation must accompany all international transcripts or certificates.
Compute grade point averages as follows: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, Failure=0. First compute total
number of grade points (numerical equivalent of letter grades, disregarding plus and minus,
multiplied by number of credit hours).
Then to determine GPA: GPA = Total Grade Points divided by Total Credit Hours
Test Scores:
Enter scores. Ask ETS to send an official copy of your scores to the Graduate School of
Arts & Sciences. You should take the GRE General test and, if required, a Subject Test.
If you have a personal copy of the required test scores, enclosing a photocopy will speed
evaluation of your application.
The institution code for the University of Virginia is 5820.
If you have not taken the GRE or other required examination, enter the month/year you intend
to take it.
In addition to the GRE General Test the following departments require the GRE Subject Test:

The Graduate School requires a TOEFL score of at least 600 (paper-based test), or 250
(computer-based test), or 90 (internet-based test) for foreign applicants whose first language is not English.
Alternatively, an IELT score of 7.0 or better may be offered for admission.
Recommendations:
The University of Virginia now accepts online recommendation letters. When completing the online application, please indicate if you would like to use the online recommendation option by selecting "Yes" in the Recommendations section. By selecting "Yes", the recommender will receive email with instructions. If you select "No", return your letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes with the recommender's signature
across the seal. The Graduate School requires two letters of recommendation, preferably
from professors who have taught in your proposed field. The following departments require
three letters of recommendation:

Personal Essay:
Briefly state why you wish to do graduate work in your selected field.
Honor System Pledge Certification:
Please read the information describing the Honor System. By selecting yes, you agree to
follow the Honor Code and certify the information given in your application is complete
and true to the best of your knowledge.
The following departments have additional requirements:
History of Art & Architecture: writing sample required.
Drama: Accepts students in three-year cycles. The next class will matriculate
Fall 2011; three letters of recommendation; a statement of purpose that addresses the reasons
the applicant wishes to pursue graduate study in an area of specialization; an interview or
audition, which applicants are responsible for arranging, held at the University of Virginia
or at selected URTA audition sites during Spring 2011.
Economics: fall semester admission only.
English: two samples of your best critical writing; for M.F.A. applicants, substantial
examples of your poetry or fiction.
French Language and Literature: an academic writing sample (preferably in French);
for M.A. degree applicants, five undergraduate courses in French literature and/or civilization/cultural studies;
for PhD degree applicants, eight graduate courses in French Literature.
Germanic Languages and Literature: three letters of recommendation; a critical writing
sample, preferably a term paper, thesis (or the like) originally submitted in an
undergraduate or graduate course and signed by the professor for whom it was originally
written.
History: an academic writing sample; for M.A. degree applicants, a 300-word research
proposal and a copy of their Master.s thesis or a major.
Nursing: 3 letters of recommendation, a current copy of applicant's curriculum vitae, a
description of a researchable problem in the applicant's area of interest.
Politics (Government & Foreign Affairs): an academic writing sample.
Slavic Languages & Literatures: a recent term paper on some aspect of Russian literature
or Slavic linguistics.
In order to fairly and efficiently evaluate applicants, the departments listed under the dates below have firm deadlines for receipt of completed applications. If the deadline has passed, contact the department to which you are applying before submitting an application.
