Application for Graduate Admission Instructions

Admission Statement

Graduate programs at Elmhurst College offer the prospective graduate student the opportunity to enhance the undergraduate degree by completing a career-focused master's degree program. It is expected that a candidate for admission to graduate study at the College was academically successful at the undergraduate level and is now ready to move on to a successful graduate-level experience. The College offers admission to the most qualified applicants to each program. Students are reviewed on the basis of profile material required for admission consideration.

Admission is offered to the student whose profile most reflects the ability for success and the ability to contribute to, as well as learn from, the classroom experience. Space in each program is limited.

Application for Admission Procedure

STEP 1

Complete the Application for Admission to Graduate Study ($25 fee).

STEP 2

Request recommendations from three individuals who can knowingly comment on your leadership, communication skills, your motivation, and your potential for success in graduate study.

STEP 3

Write a 1,000 word Statement of Purpose describing your personal and professional goals and how completing a graduate degree will support these goals.

MBA applicants only: address one of the following questions as your Statement of Purpose:

  • What are your career goals? How will an MBA help you achieve these goals?
  • Describe one or two significant accomplishments, in the past five years, that you are most proud of and discuss why you view them as such.
  • Describe a setback or failure and discuss what you have learned from it.


STEP 4

Submit a current resume documenting your work history, including areas of professional growth, prior professional training experiences, and level of responsibility in your most recent position.

STEP 5

Students applying to the Master of Arts in Industrial/Organizational Psychology must submit GRE scores taken in the last five years. Graduate examination scores are used to obtain useful information about your academic ability and for advising purposes only.

STEP 6

Submit official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate colleges and universities attended.

STEP 7

International students are asked to submit an official evaluation in English of all university transcripts by a foreign credentials agency. Agencies that provide this service are:

International students are also asked to submit proof of English proficiency as evidenced by a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based and a minimum score of 213 on the computer-based TOEFL examination (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

STEP 8

Complete an interview with the graduate program coordinator.

Preferred Application Deadline

The preferred application completion deadline requires prospective graduate students to submit the application for admission and all supporting documents to the School for Advanced Learning by the preferred date for priority admission consideration. As application files are completed, the program coordinators will interview students. Offers of admission will be made following the preferred application completion deadline. Applications for admission will be accepted after the deadline until all programs are fully enrolled.

Program Specific Admission Requirements

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

  • Preferred application completion deadline is May 12, 2006
  • In addition to the Statement of Purpose, a document required as part of the application process, the MBA applicant must also submit the business writing analysis case study.

Master in Professional Accountancy

  • Prerequisite courses: intermediate accounting I and II, cost accounting, and income tax.
  • Students may enter this program in the fall, spring, and summer terms. Preferred application completion deadlines are January 6, 2006, for spring term; May 5, 2006, for summer term; and July 14, 2006, for fall term.

Master of Arts in English Studies

  • Sample of professional/work place writing which represents you at your best.
  • Students may enter this program in the fall, spring, and summer terms. Preferred application completion deadlines are January 6, 2006, for spring term; May 5, 2006, for summer term; and July 14, 2006, for fall term.

Master of Arts in Industrial/Organizational Psychology

  • Prerequisite courses: general psychology, statistics, and research methods. Students will not be considered for admission to this program unless the prerequisites are completed or the student is able to complete them before the program begins.
  • GRE examination scores taken within the last five years.
  • Preferred application completion deadline is July 14, 2006

Master of Education in Early Childhood Special Education

  • Prerequisite course: child development or lifespan development.
  • A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.75 for all undergraduate course work.
  • Preferred application completion deadline is JUly 14, 2006

Master of Education in Teacher Leadership

  • Your resume should include teaching certifications and endorsements with expiration and renewal dates, professional development activities, and information on leadership roles you've held in your school or community, in addition to standard resume information.
  • Students may enter this program in the fall, spring, and summer terms. Preferred application completion deadlines are January 6, 2006, for spring term; May 5, 2006, for summer term; and July 14, 2006, for fall term.

Master of Science in Computer Network Systems

  • Prerequisite courses will be required of students entering the program without an undergraduate degree in CS/IS or without relevant work experience. The prerequisites will be determined by the program coordinator. Proficiency in a programming language, especially VB.NET is expected.
  • Preferred application completion deadline is JUly 14, 2006

Master of Science in Nursing

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing
  • Successful completion of college-level courses in nursing research and statistics
  • Applicants must hold a current R.N. licensure in Illinois and provide a hard copy of the license with the application materials
  • Documentation of computer experience/literacy (ability to use MS WORD, email and the Internet)
  • Students may enter this program in the fall, spring, and summer terms. Preferred application completion deadlines are January 6, 2006, for spring term; May 5, 2006, for summer term; and July 14, 2006, for fall term.

Master of Science in Supply Chain Management

  • Although the supply chain management program has no specific prerequisites, students with insufficient academic or professional preparation for the graduate program may be required to take selected undergraduate courses before entering the program. These courses will be determined in consultation with the program coordinator.
  • Peferred application completion deadline is May 19, 2006

Financial Aid

Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (www.studentaid.ed.gov) and the FAFSA Companion (http://elmhurst.edu/finaid/). These forms may be requested from the Office of Financial Aid or the School for Advanced Learning. It is important to indicate that you plan to be an applicant for graduate study at the College when requesting the financial aid forms. It is also important to consider graduate study financing early in the application process.
