Application Instructions

Priority processing dates

Students who have submitted an admission application and all required documents by the following dates will receive priority in admission processing:

Fall semester: March 1

Spring semester: November 15

We encourage you to apply early to ensure a smooth transition to the University. If you have questions about the admission requirements or application process, please contact the Office of Admissions.

Freshman admission

If you are a first-time college student, or have attempted fewer than 12 college-level credits, you must meet the following admission requirements and college preparatory classes:

Admission requirements

  • An ACT composite score of 22 or SAT combined math and verbal score of 1030 (920 if taken before April 1995), or
    A 2.5 grade point average, or
    Rank in the upper half of your high school graduating class.
  • College preparatory program Four years of English.
    Three years of math, including Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II, or sequential equivalent. Students are encouraged to take a math class their senior year of high school.
    Three years of social studies, including one year of global studies, one year of American history, and one year of government or another third-year course (i.e. economics, psychology, sociology).
    Two years of laboratory science. One must be Earth science, biology, chemistry or physics. The second year may be one of those sciences or another approved college preparatory laboratory science.
    Two years chosen from the following: foreign language (preferably two years), computer science, visual and performing arts, or vocational education.

Admission requirements may vary for out-of-state students. There may also be special circumstances which affect your admission to Montana State University Billings. Contact the Office of Admissions if you have questions.

Freshman application procedures

Applying for admission as a new freshman is a three-step process:

  1. Submit a complete admission application form along with the $30 online application fee and $5 service fee to the Admissions Office. If you are still in high school, complete the Self Report of High School Courses form in this packet. If you are unsure of anything concerning your academic record, consult your guidance counselor or principal.
  2. Request that your ACT or SAT test results be sent to the Admissions Office directly from the testing company.
  3. Request that only your final high school transcripts be sent to the Admissions Office. Information provided on the self-report form will be verified from this transcript.
Transfer student admission

If you have attended another college and attempted 12 or more credits, you can transfer to Montana State University Billings with a minimum 2.0 grade-point average. If you have attempted fewer than 12 semester credits, you must satisfy the same admission requirements as new freshmen.

Applying for admission as a transfer student is a two-step process:

  1. Submit a completed admission application along with the $30 online application fee and $5 service fee to Montana State University Billings Admissions Office.
  2. Request that all college transcripts be sent directly to Montana State University Billings Admissions Office. Admissions will review your transcripts and provide you information about the transfer of credits.
Non-traditional students

Non-traditional age applicants (over 21 or out of high school more than three years) should submit online an admission application with $35 total, and high school or college transcripts (or GED scores). Montana State University Billings freshman admission requirements do not apply to non-traditional students

Traditional-age freshmen with GED or attending part-time

First-time college students who are not yet 21 and who have earned a GED orplan to attend part-time (taking seven or fewer credits) should submit an online admission application with $35 total, high school transcripts or GED scores, and results from either the ACT or SAT test.
