Eligibility for Admission

To be eligible for admission, applicants generally must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Thomas Jefferson occasionally accepts applicants who do not have a bachelor's degree, provided that they have at least three-fourths of the units necessary for a bachelor's degree (typically 90 semester hours) and show unusual aptitude for the study of law. Applicants with fewer than three-fourths of the units necessary for a bachelor's degree may be accepted upon a showing of truly exceptional aptitude for the study of law.

The Application Process

Students seeking admission to the Thomas Jefferson School of Law should complete the following steps:

1. Submit an admission application along with a $35 non-refundable application fee (paid online) and a personal statement concerning your reasons for wishing to attend law school.

2. Register with the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) and provide it with all information requested, including a transcript for each college or university you have attended. You may obtain a registration form by requesting a copy of the LSAT/LSDAS Registration and Information Book from Law Services, Box 2000, Newton, PA. 18940-0998, phone number (215) 968-1001, or by contacting the Thomas Jefferson Admissions Office.

3. Register for and take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). The LSAT is administered by the Law School Admissions Service at sites all over the United States four times each year: in September or October, December, February, and June. The application deadline generally is about one month prior to the test date. A registration form is included in the LSAT/LSDAS Registration and Information Book and is available from the Admissions Office. Students seeking admission in the fall entering class must take the LSAT no later than the preceding June, while those seeking admission in the spring entering class must take the LSAT no later than the preceding December.

4. Submissitof two letters of recommendation. We prefer that these letters be from college professors who can attest to your ability to enter a competitive professional program. If you have been out of school for some time, letters from an employer can be helpful. Although you are not restricted to two letters, your file will be considered complete when two letters have been received.

We recommend that your letters be submitted through the LSAC letter of recommendation service. This service is included in your LSDAS Registration subscription. Your letters will be copied and sent to us along with your LSDAS Report or as your letters are received by LSDAS.

To use this service, follow the directions for submitting letters outlined in the 1999-2000 LSAT/LSDAS Registration and Information Book, page 20. You will need to fill out and provide your letter writers with a letter of recommendation form from the LSAT/LSDAS Registration and Information Book.

If a letter writer wishes to write specifically about your qualifications for Thomas Jefferson School of Law, he or she must send the letter directly to: Admissions, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, 2121 San Diego Avenue, San Diego, CA 92110.

5. If you would like the opportunity to discuss your qualifications with an admissions office, you may call the Admissions Office and schedule an interview on your own initiative. If you wish to schedule an interview, you should do so immediately after submitting your application. Such interviews may be conducted by telephone if you do not live within a reasonable distance from the law school.

Admissions Deadlines

Thomas Jefferson utilizes a rolling admissions process whereby applications are considered as they are received. Under this system, the earlier an applicant applies, the greater are the chances of being admitted. Thus, applicants are well advised to apply as early as possible and to complete their file as quickly as possible. Thomas Jefferson, however, has no formal deadline for applying.

The Post Application Process

Once the applicant's file is complete, it is forwarded to the Admissions Committee for a decision. An application may be accepted, rejected or held for consideration at a later meeting. For this reason, there is no fixed period that elapses between completion of the file and notification of the applicant of a decision.

If an application is accepted, the applicant will be requested to send Thomas Jefferson a certified copy of all undergraduate transcripts and a non-refundable tuition deposit of $100 in order to hold the applicant's place in class.

Applicants who have paid their deposit will be sent registration materials when available. Applicants must pay a second, non-refundable tuition deposit of $300.

Transfer Students

Students seeking to transfer from another law school must submit a completed application with the $35 non-refundable application fee (paid online), an LSDAS report, and undergraduate and law school transcripts.

In no case will a student be permitted to transfer more than 44 units of credit and, in some cases, Thomas Jefferson may allow transfer of fewer units of credit.

Visiting Students

Students who wish to visit Thomas Jefferson for a semester or summer session may apply for visitor status. The student should submit an application for admission, a law school transcript, and a letter from the dean of the student's law school stating that the student is in good standing and that Thomas Jefferson credits will be accepted for transfer by that law school.
