Application Coversheet
Thank you for expressing interest in our graduate program in philosophy. The application menu lists several items that will provide information about our program, as well as materials needed for application for admission to the Graduate School of the University of Kansas and for Teaching Assistantships (in the Department of Philosophy, and in the Western Civilization Program of the University of Kansas). A copy of our Graduate School Catalog can be obtained from the Office of Admissions and Records, Strong Hall, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045. General information concerning financial aid is available directly from the Office of Student Financial Aid, Strong Hall, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045.

To apply for admission to the graduate program you must supply us with the following items:
  • the completed application form;
  • c.v. or resume;
  • two official transcripts of your academic record sent under separate cover;
  • three letters of reference (using the forms provided);
  • an official copy of recent GRE scores (verbal, quantitative and analytical);
  • a sample of writing (preferably philosophical writing), approximately 10-15 pages in length sent under separate cover;
  • a brief (one or two page) statement of academic purposes;
  • an application fee of $35 paid via secure server.

Those wishing to apply for a Teaching Assistantship in the Department of Philosophy should also include the appropriate application form. International students whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL scores (23 on all part scores and at least 4.0 on the essay) and, if applying for a teaching assistantship, TSE scores (minimum 50 pts). All the above application materials should be returned directly to me. Applications for financial aid and Teaching Assistantships must be received by February 1, 2002 for Fall 2002.

Please note that applications for Teaching Assistantships in Western Civilization Program should be sent directly to the Director of that program and must include separate copies of supporting materials (transcripts, letters of recommendation, TSE scores if applicable).

If you have further questions concerning our graduate program, do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely yours,

Russ Shafer-Landau
