Application Instructions

The University of the Middle East Project (UME) is an independent non-profit and non-governmental organization whose objective is to provide higher education opportunities of the highest standard for all the peoples and communities of the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) through intensive 4 to 5-week programs designed for various audiences of professionals, students, researchers, civil society leaders from throughout the MENA region. The Institute in Sustainable Development Policies is one of the many programs the University of the Middle East project is organizing on topics including teacher education, public heath, governance public policy and civil society.

The academic program and curriculum of the Institute in Sustainable Development Policies will be interdisciplinary and will address the economics of sustainable development, and the policies for sustainable development at the local, national, regional and global levels. The Institute will explore some of the most pressing sustainability issues faced in the Middle East and North Africa (water management, transition to clean and renewable energies, industrial ecology, waste management, sustainable agriculture and management of natural resources, sustainable urban planning). The program will be taught by renowned academics from prestigious institutions in the United States, Europe and MENA region. Field work and group projects will constitute an important component of the curriculum and participants' work will be evaluated through individual and collective reports and projects.

The Institute in Sustainable Development Policies will be held in Spain, from June 18th to July 20th, 2003.

To apply to the University of the Middle East 2003 Summer Institute in Sustainable Development Policies, you must:

  • Have a Bachelor of Sciences or a Bachelor of Arts or equivalent.


  • Have a work experience of at least 2 years in fields relating to development and/or environment, in the public or private sectors, or in academia and/or non-governmental organizations. You are eligible (provided you have had past work experience) if you are currently enrolled in a graduate program (Masters, Ph.D.) in one of the following fields: Economics, Social Sciences, Political Sciences, Law, Public Administration, Business and Management, Environmental and Life Sciences (Biology, Agronomy, Chemistry, etc.), Environmental Engineering (Hydrology, Energy, etc.), Architecture and Urban Studies, Public Health, . . .(this list is not exhaustive).


  • Be a citizen and resident of any country of the Middle East and North Africa region


  • Be proficient in written and spoken English


  • Complete the Online Application

Application must be submitted before February 15, 2003. It is strongly recommended that you submit your application early. Early applications will be given priority. No late applications will be accepted.

Please submit the following pieces:

  1. Complete online application form.


  2. Essay #1 (part of the online application) Personal statement of 300 words or less: What is your personal motivation for attending the Institute and what do you hope to learn from it? What do you think you will contribute to 1) enhancing the academic richness of the program; 2) the learning of the other participants?


  3. Essay #2 (part of the online application) Please briefly describe in less than 300 words one of the work projects dealing with development and/or environment issues , you have been involved with (at the local or national level, and in various institutional contexts either in NGOs, government agencies, city councils, private companies, international organizations, etc...)


  4. Essay #3 (part of the online application) Please answer the following questions in less than 800 words: What does sustainability mean to you from your own concrete experience? What are, in your opinion, the obstacles to reach sustainability at the level of your country and region, and how do you think they could be overcome (including what type of policies)?

All Essays must be written in English and may not be written, edited or translated by anyone but yourself.
  1. Complete resume (curriculum vitae) (part of the online application) including academic achievement, professional experience (in public sector, private sector, NGOs, associations, etc.), other experience (volunteering in associations, NGOs, etc.), publications, speeches, conferences, references.


  2. Two letters of recommendation from employers and/or academics who know the candidate well and will comment on his or her achievements and personality. All letters of recommendations should be signed by the recommender and placed in a sealed envelope. The recommender should also sign or stamp the seal and write the applicants name on the front of the envelope. Additional letters of recommendation may also be sent. Letters should be preferably written in English but letters in French and Arabic may also be sent. It is preferred that the letters of recommendation be sent with the completed application.


  3. Copies of transcripts of all the courses taken since your first year of undergraduate studies - Make sure that your name appears in English on your transcripts.

Preliminary selection will be based principally on the application form, essays and curriculum vitae. Interviews of the selected semi- finalists will be conducted by phone or in person in March and April. Accepted applicants will be notified of their status on the University of the Middle East Website at www.ume.org on April 20, 2003.

Please do not call or email the University of the Middle East regarding the status of your application before this date. The University of the Middle East is solely responsible for all decisions regarding admission (independent from all governmental, educational or other institutions). Comprehensive Scholarships are available to most participants.
